Questa scultura fu commissionata da Giovanni Azzarini per il monumento funebre di suo padre, un ricco uomo d'affari che fece la sua fortuna a Montevideo (Uruguay). La figura di un minatore che, in un momento di abbandono, appoggia il suo peso su una carriola è definita da una solida struttura monumentale e da un attento studio anatomico, in particolare nel busto e nelle spalle, che sono distorte dalla fatica. Nonostante la tensa plasticità del pezzo, il bronzo offre molte opportunità per l'interplay di luce e ombra. A partire dal 1890,
