Nel corso di una carriera di cinquant'anni che includeva la formazione precoce con Samuel F. B. Morse, Field divenne uno dei pittori itineranti di maggior successo in Antebellum New England e New York State. Ha sviluppato un repertorio di formule compositive per descrivere le caratteristiche e l'ambiente dei suoi sitter, che appartenevano alla classe media rurale emergente.
