Il New England artista folk Erastus Salisbury Field era in gran parte autodidatta. Durante la prima fase della sua carriera ha lavorato come pittore itinerante ritratto in e intorno alla sua città natale di Leverett, Massachusetts, e nei villaggi che si estende a sud lungo il fiume Connecticut. Ha prodotto più di 150 ritratti per la sua clientela rurale in uno stile franco e decisamente lineare.
