Questo è il lavoro finale Delacroix dedicato a un tema che lo aveva attirato per la prima volta nel 1835. Rappresenta il poeta esiliato Ovid, che in A.D. 8 è stato bandito da Roma alla costa del Mar Nero, all'attuale Constantsa, Romania. È stato trattato con gentilezza dai Sciti, che vengono mostrati alimentandolo ed esprimendo il latte di mare da bere. Questo dipinto riprende una composizione più grande che Delacroix ha esposto al Salone del 1859 (ora National Gallery, Londra). Le recensioni erano miste, ma i suoi ammiratori comprendevano Edgar Degas e il critico Charles Baudelaire, che scrisse "La mente si affonda in esso con un lento e apprezzativo rapimento..."
