Delacroix raramente ritrasse chiunque altro che la sua famiglia e gli amici più vicini. Il suo affetto per Madame Riesener, zia dal matrimonio, è espresso attraverso la franca tenerezza di questo ritratto. Una volta era conosciuta per la sua bellezza: circa trent'anni prima della data di questo ritratto ha servito come una signora in attesa di imperatrice Josephine, e avendo catturato l'occhio di Napoleone, impegnato in un breve collegamento con lui. Dopo la sua morte, Delacroix scrisse a George Sand, "ognuno degli esseri necessari alla nostra esistenza che scompare, porta via con sé un intero mondo di sentimenti che nessun altro rapporto può ravvivare".
