Un artista francese influenzato da ukiyo-e, arte buddista e scultura romanica. Per mezzo di contorni chiari e colori ben divisi, Gauguin ha mescolato immagini riccamente implicite con ornamentazione ed è conosciuto come artista rappresentativo del simbolismo e del sintetismo in Francia alla fine del XIX secolo. Nei suoi ultimi anni, lasciò l'Europa per Tahiti e creò opere che mettevano in discussione il significato dell'esistenza umana.
