In molti modi, Fanny Churberg è stato un pioniere nella storia dell'arte finlandese. Era un artista indipendente, ambizioso e coraggioso. Come studentessa femminile a Düsseldorf, è stata costretta a studiare privatamente dal momento che l'Accademia d'Arte non ammetteva le donne. Il pittore tedesco Carl Ludwig fu il suo insegnante nel 1867 e nel 1871-1874. Dipinse attivamente per dieci anni, ma poi si mosse per promuovere l'artigianato. Mentre la pittura del paesaggio era più vicina al suo cuore, sviluppò anche un interesse per la pittura di vita ancora mentre studiava a Parigi nel 1875-1876. Il suo lavoro in questo genere è tra i migliori della storia dell'arte finlandese.
