Il naturalismo di Barocci, l'emozione accresciuta e la brillantezza coloristica hanno contribuito a mettere in scena quello che è diventato noto come arte barocca. Le sue sottili e morbide texture superficiali sono state ispirate in parte dal pittore manierista italiano Correggio. Questa tela è concepita come una meditazione su San Francesco d'Assisi (1181/82-1226), che si mostra in una grotta sul Monte La Verna, dove ha ricevuto gli stimmati, qui raffigurati come chiodi sporgenti, in conformità alle prime fonti scritte francescane.
