Insieme ad almeno due disegni a figura intera dei modelli, Renoir ha anche creato molti disegni preparatori per ciascuna delle figure prima di mettere fine pennello a tela. A causa della critica ricevuta per la levigatezza scultorea del dipinto e un cambiamento nello stile percepito dell'artista, Renoir, che è stato esaurito dallo sforzo, ha affermato che non avrebbe mai più dedicare un lungo periodo di tempo per un unico pezzo di lavoro.
