Questo dipinto fu creato dopo la morte di San Valentino Godé-Darel il 25 gennaio 1915 a Vevey (vedi il suo ritratto del 1912, inv. 1133). Due studi di colore (proprietà privata; Ferdinand Hodler, exh. cat. Zurich/Berlin, Nationalgalerie/Paris, Musée du Petit Palais 1983, n. 176 f., ills di colore. p. 393 f.) sono considerati fasi preliminari. Nella sua teoria del parallelismo, Hodler associa l'orizzontale alla morte, nella cui grande unità tutta la vita ritorna.
