Con indicatori di profondità, Khnopff ha trasformato lo scaffale che sostiene il vaso in una striscia astratta di blu contro uno sfondo cremisi. Il fan giapponese e i colori rosa pallido, crema e blu indicano l'ammirazione dell'artista per lo stile innovativo di James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). Il lavoro di Whistler era ben noto tra l'avanguardia artistica in Belgio, essendo stato mostrato con la società espositiva radicale Les XX a Bruxelles, che Khnopff ha aiutato a trovare.
