Anche se il lavoro di Lungren si concentra principalmente sui paesaggi del sud-ovest del deserto, ha anche dipinto picchi remoti della Sierra e Rockies. Seats of the Mighty raffigura il lato orientale dei Colorado Rockies tra Trinidad e Colorado Springs. Nato nel Maryland, Lungren è cresciuto in Ohio. Dopo aver studiato brevemente a Cincinnati, si trasferì a Filadelfia, dove si istruì all'Accademia di Belle Arti della Pennsylvania sotto Thomas Eakins. Dopo aver continuato la sua formazione a Parigi, iniziò la sua carriera a New York City come illustratore di riviste, ma nel 1892 andò a ovest sotto gli auspici della ferrovia. Dopo di che, si concentrò su soggetti e paesaggi nativi americani. Si trasferì a Los Angeles nel 1903 e quattro anni dopo si stabilì definitivamente a Santa Barbara.
