Biard era uno dei più importanti artisti itineranti del XIX secolo. Nato a Lione, in Francia, si è laureato in Belle Arti. Il suo lavoro come insegnante di disegno della marina francese ha reso possibile una serie di viaggi di registrazione nei paesi europei e africani negli anni 1820 e 1830. L'artista sbarcò in Brasile nel 1858, dove rimase per un anno. La sua visita a nord del paese ha portato ad alcuni record di scene giornaliere di popoli indigeni, come in “Un fabricação do curatore na floresta amazônica”, appartenente al Musée du Nouveau Monde in Francia.
