Bourdon andò in Svezia nel 1652, dove entrò al servizio di quel monarca reducibile Regina Christina, che alla fine arrese la politica per l'arte. Durante i suoi anni in Svezia, Bourdon realizzò principalmente ritratti, caratterizzati dalla loro eleganza e sottigliezza. Di solito sono busto-lunghezza con il volto leggermente girato, un tipo di ritratto che doveva essere estremamente influente sulla prossima generazione di pittori, in particolare Le Brun e Mignard, e una serie di ritrattisti più piccoli.
