I veri strumenti della gloria napoleonica, le cosiddette stampe espiali di Jean-Charles Pellerin raffigurano un vero eroe romantico nella veste di Bonaparte. Per cominciare con immagini propagandistiche nel XIX secolo, la ristampa del 1912 di proprietà del Bertrand Museum serviva a gonfiare il sentimento patriottico dei francesi all'alba della prima guerra mondiale. L'assedio di Tolone (1793) segna qui la reputazione militare di un giovane Bonaparte sia generale che militare, che già si distingue per la sua presenza. Fu anche in mezzo a questo fuoco di artiglieria che Jean-Andoche Junot, conosciuto come La Tempête, fece il suo debutto come segretario al futuro imperatore.
