Il critico d’arte Denis Diderot ha raramente lodato il ritrattista popolare Drouais, ma ha ammesso che “dipinge bene i bambini; infonde gli occhi con la vita, la trasparenza, una ricchezza umida, nuotando in modo che sembrano guardarti e sorridere allo stesso tempo.” Qui Drouais accoppiò tali occhi con quelli di un cucciolo che penzolava nelle braccia del bambino. Questa è probabilmente una replica autografa di un dipinto mostrato al Salone del 1767 e datato 1766.
