L'immagine è stata acquistata come opera di Andrea del Castagno. Il trattamento del paesaggio, tuttavia, non è uncharacteristico del lavoro di Castagno, come è la figura poco costruita. Le affinità più vicine di stile sono con opere di Francesco Botticini (circa 1446–97), che sembra essere stato attivo nel workshop di Verrocchio alla fine del 1460. Anche se l'immagine è stata datata già dal 1465, sembra dipendere da una famosa pala d'altare di Botticelli del 1473–74 nella Gemäldegalerie, Berlino-Dahlem. Il quadro ha subito notevoli danni. Oltre ad una grande perdita che scorre attraverso il torso del santo, l'immagine è stata massicciamente abrasa attraverso la pulizia. La forma a destra del santo è un pentimento.
