La composizione di questo quadro sembra essere stata ispirata da una scultura in basso rilievo, molto probabilmente da Donatello o Michelangelo (Granacci era stato un compagno di scuola con Michelangelo nel laboratorio di Ghirlandaio). Tuttavia, Granacci ha reso la composizione più pittorica ponendo le figure in una stanza piena di luce. Esiste un'altra versione dell'immagine di Granacci e la stessa composizione è stata trattata da Bacchiacca (Linsky Collection, The Met). L'immagine attuale risale al 1520 circa.
