Nato a Baltimora, Smith era quasi interamente un artista autodidatta conosciuto principalmente per i suoi paesaggi e le sue illustrazioni. Ha avuto una carriera multiforme come ingegnere, artista, autore e oratore. Dopo la guerra civile, lavorò come ingegnere navale, ma nel 1880 si rivolse a dipingere a tempo pieno. Era conosciuto soprattutto per il suo carbone e acquerelli che spesso apparve nei suoi libri di viaggio. Dipinse spesso en plein air ed espose presso le principali sedi della costa orientale, tra cui la National Academy of Design, l'Art Institute di Chicago e l'Accademia della Pennsylvania.
