John Piper è stato un artista consolidato in prima linea del movimento neo-romano al momento della seconda guerra mondiale. Aveva stabilito la sua reputazione negli anni '30, concentrandosi su architettura e paesaggi e sperimentando anche l'astrazione. Negli anni '40 Piper si era allontanato dalla completa astrazione e ha condiviso alcune somiglianze in stile ad artisti come Graham Sutherland, che insieme a artisti come Henry Moore e giovani come John Minton, sono stati spesso raggruppati come Neo-Romantici. .
