Questo dipinto venne alla luce nel 1900, quando fu prestato alla grande mostra di Goya a Madrid come il ciondolo ad un ritratto del marito della babysitter, Juan Bautista de Goicoechea y Urrutia. Juan Bautista è stato nominato Ministro della Guerra a Ferdinando VII nel 1815 e nel suo ritratto (ora nello Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlesruhe) indossa l'ordine di Carlo III, ricevuto nello stesso anno. Era apparentemente lontanamente legato a Gumersinda Goicoechea, che sposò il figlio di Goya Javier nel 1805. Il nostro ritratto potrebbe essere stato dipinto vicino al tempo del matrimonio di Javier, ma è stato certamente eseguito da 1815/16. Nonostante la firma sull'anello — un dispositivo preferito di Goya — l'attribuzione di questo ritratto è stata recentemente messa in discussione da alcune autorità.
