Questo dipinto è stato incluso in una serie di sette scene commissionate dal Duca di Palazzo Sobradiel a Zaragoza per la sua cappella privata. Mostra il momento in Matteo 1:20 quando l'Angelo Gabriele visita San Giuseppe per dirgli che deve accettare la Vergine Maria come sua moglie senza esitazione. Per la composizione, Francisco Goya fu ispirato da opere del pittore Simon Vouet (1540–1649), che scoprì attraverso incisioni di Michel Dorigny.
