Nel 1627, mentre ancora residente a Llerena, Zurbarán dipinse questa spettacolare immagine, che lo rese famoso, per i Domenicani. È stato posto in una piccola cappella oratoria e ha fatto una forte impressione. Il dramma rappresentato nella composizione è aumentato dalla luce sopraffatta, che aumenta poi trasforma il reale in superreale, esprimendo così la duplice natura di Cristo.
