Nonostante la nuanced rappresentazione della testa e del volto dell'uomo, questo dipinto non era inteso come ritratto ma come studio di un modello. Biard si concentrò sulle caratteristiche e l’espressione della sitter, producendo una somiglianza convincente. Purtroppo, non sappiamo il nome della sitter, che ha posato nello studio dell’artista a Parigi nel 1848. In quell'anno, la schiavitù fu abolita definitivamente nelle colonie d'oltremare della Francia, e Biard ricevette una commissione commemorativa dell'evento. Questo studio probabilmente riguarda l'immagine (Château de Versailles).
