Diday ha concentrato la sua attenzione sulle transizioni di luce e ombra in questo passaggio arcuato, che è stato rappresentato da un certo numero di artisti all'inizio del XIX secolo. Si dice che il pittore abbia esposto molti studi eseguiti in Italia dopo il suo soggiorno del 1824–25. L'esempio attuale potrebbe essere stato incluso in una mostra tenutasi a Galerie Lebrun, Parigi, nel 1826, l'anno dopo la sua pittura.
