Ai suoi tempi, Frank Duveneck era l’artista più celebre di Cincinnati. Nato a Covington, Kentucky, agli immigrati bavaresi, Duveneck viaggiò a Monaco nel 1870 per perseguire la sua educazione artistica. A quel tempo, Monaco era sede di alcuni degli artisti più avanzati d'Europa, tra cui Wilhelm Leibl, i cui ritratti oscuri e insentimentali impressionarono il giovane americano. Duveneck in seguito divenne un insegnante influente, portando gli aspetti liberanti dell'arte progressiva tedesca negli Stati Uniti.
