Waller si sforzava di migliorare il gusto americano e l'istruzione d'arte e applaudì nuovi musei come il Metropolitan, che ha aperto nel 1870. Ha ambientato questa scena nella seconda casa del museo, la Douglas Mansion sulla West Fourteenth Street, che occupava dal 1873 al 1879. L’opera presenta un visitatore femminile come il devoto archetipico dell’arte e della cultura, esprimendo così l’associazione femminile con i passatempi civili. Immaginate due gallerie al secondo piano come apparivano nel 1879, quando il ritratto sulla vista nella stanza lontana, allora attribuito a Leonardo, era in prestito da un collezionista privato. Il "The Wages of War" di Henry Peters Gray del 1848 (73.5) è mostrato installato sopra la porta.
