L’iconica vista di Napoli, come si vede attraverso la fessura tra la tomba di Virgilio a sinistra e l’affioramento roccioso a destra, è stata l’attrazione principale del Grand Tour. Catel usò questo disegno plein-air come base per una composizione più grande (Museum Folkwang, Essen) che presenta un cane e due figure umane, uno dei quali potrebbe essere il principe ufficiale dello stato russo Alexander Nikolaevich Golitsyn, che accompagnò l'artista in un viaggio nel sud Italia nel 1818.
