Uno dei dipinti più complicati di Repin, il massiccio 6 da 11 piedi Reply dei Cossacks Zaporozhian ha preso più di un decennio per completare. Mentre lavorava sul dipinto, registrò attentamente gli anni al bordo inferiore della tela. Senza fretta, Alessandro III, imperatore di Russia, ha acquistato il dipinto per 30.000 rubli, che all'epoca era la somma più grande mai pagato per un dipinto russo. Anche se Repin ha progettato il dipinto per essere uno sguardo comico al governo, alla fine ha comportato i temi di libertà, fraternità e uguaglianza. Il dipinto è ora tenuto nel Museo statale russo a San Pietroburgo.
