Stuck fu uno dei fondatori della Secessione di Monaco, 1892. Nel 1895, anno in cui questo quadro fu dipinto, fu nominato professore all'Accademia di Belle Arti, dove Kandinsky e Klee divennero entrambi suoi allievi. Fu il principale esponente del mondo immaginario enigmatico del simbolismo, un modello da seguire per gli sperimentatori della pittura alla fine del XIX secolo a Monaco. L'abbraccio letale della femme fatale, la donna sensorialmente attraente e demoniaca è un tema che ricrea frequentemente nelle sue opere. Ogni dispositivo stilistico – la composizione stipati in uno spazio stretto e stretto, i colori rude (che purtroppo si sono oscurati con il passare del tempo), e la modellazione ingombrante – intensifica il brutale erotismo dell'immagine.
