Nel 1888 Remington fu incaricato di illustrare The Song of Hiawatha, il poema epico di Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, per un'edizione deluxe pubblicata nel 1891. Da allora un sofisticato praticante della tecnica grisaille, Remington eseguì ventidue dipinti a olio bianco e nero, uno per ciascuno dei canti del poema. Questa rappresentazione accompagna il canto 6, che descrive i due amici più vicini di Hiawatha: Chibiabos, il musicista e Kwasind, l’uomo forte. Il boulder frastagliato nel fiume allude a una delle imprese di Kwasind di forza. Taunted con accuse di pigrizia, gettò una roccia enorme nel fiume Pauwating, dove rimase visibile sopra la linea idrica durante i mesi estivi.
