Nell'aprile del 1887 Remington viaggiò in una spedizione di schizzi nell'ovest canadese. Viaggiando verso Alberta, si diresse verso nord verso Calgary e tentò, con un successo limitato, di schizzare la Blackfeet lungo il fiume Bow. Ha raccolto un gran numero di artefatti durante il viaggio, e alcuni di loro sono stati incorporati in questo dipinto, che ha completato nel suo studio in un secondo momento. Il dipinto è stato riprodotto nel New Monthly Magazine di Harper nel maggio 1891, e il soggetto è stato descritto come “un Cree, o forse un Blackfoot, che uno era adatto a correre attraverso i Monti Selkirk o altrove sulle pianure del Territorio britannico, o ben a nord nelle Rockies. ”
