La prima formazione di Frederick MacMonnies nell'arte arrivò all'età di diciassette anni, quando apprese ad Augustus Saint-Gaudens a New York. Lo scultore ha continuato i suoi studi presso la National Academy of Design e la Art Students League di New York.
