La paralisi parziale costrinse Gao Fenghan a commutare il midcareer dalla scrittura con la mano destra alla mano sinistra. Mentre il lavoro di destra della sua gioventù è elegante e un po' conservatore, il suo lavoro maturo di sinistra, come visto qui, è libero e audace, pieno di strutture di carattere non convenzionali e linee oscillanti. Yangzhou del XVIII secolo era altamente tollerante dell'eccentricità, e il lavoro tardivo di Gao era ben accolto. Gao era anche un pittore, e, su questo rotolo, la combinazione di parola e immagine è una potente dichiarazione del rapporto stretto tra queste due arti nella cultura cinese.
