Per ampliare le sue collezioni, il Museo di Etnologia di Amburgo ha contribuito al finanziamento del primo viaggio in Africa di Leo Frobenius (1904-1906). Nel gennaio 1906, Georg Thilenius, direttore del museo, si rivolse all'autorità educativa con una richiesta di finanziamento aggiuntivo: Invece dei 2000 oggetti attesi, 4.600 erano già arrivati al museo. Inoltre, Frobenius ha richiesto più soldi per continuare le sue attività di raccolta.
