Un uomo e una donna in barca a remi quasi al tramonto, le loro riflessioni nell'acqua. Ha un ombrello, tiene i remi. Non si guardano a vicenda. Dietro di loro, il mare calmo e la terraferma. Schjeldrup ha ottenuto la sua formazione a Parigi e in Italia dove ha avuto il più successo come un genere- e ritratto pittore. Fu commissionata a dipingere ritratti di diverse importanti figure norvegesi come il grande compositore norvegese Edvard Grieg. I suoi dipinti di genere avevano spesso motivi aneddotici della natura norvegese e delle situazioni quotidiane.
