Lambdin studiò a Monaco e a Parigi a metà degli anni '50, poi si concentrò sui ritratti dei bambini e sulle scene di genere sentimentali, in particolare dei soldati della guerra civile in campo o a casa. Fece il suo quartier generale a Filadelfia ma trascorse gli anni dal 1868 al 1870 a New York, dove avrebbe potuto incontrare John La Farge, il rinomato pittore della vita. Dopo una breve visita in Europa nel 1870, Lambdin tornò a Filadelfia e si dedicò alle immagini floreali. Questa tela, una delle sue opere più innovative e ambiziose, fu probabilmente eseguita durante gli anni 1870 in emulazione delle opere di La Farge.
