Grande Chicago Il fuoco del 1871 ha ucciso 300 persone, ha lasciato 100.000 senzatetto, e ha livellato quattro miglia quadrate della città. Eppure, mentre le fiamme morirono, risolse la disperazione. Questa fotografia è stata fatta forse un mese dopo il fuoco, e mostra le case di fortuna, le imprese, i pali del telegrafo, e le tracce del tram che erano in atto anche prima che le macerie sono state spinte nel lago. Nel giro di tre anni, Chicago avrebbe ripreso la sua posizione come la città principale del Midwest. Questo panorama fu probabilmente fatto da George N. Barnard, che documentò l'enorme devastazione del Sud dalla campagna del generale William Tecumseh Sherman durante la guerra civile. Barnard aveva uno studio nel centro di Chicago, ma, costretto nel lago per fuggire dal fuoco, ha perso tutto tranne le attrezzature che ha tenuto aloft in acqua. Come Chicago stessa, si riprese rapidamente e si unì ai colleghi che documentarono la ricostruzione della città.
