Fu all’Accademia d’Arte dell’Aia che Breitner imparò a disegnare la vita, ma rifiutò totalmente gli ideali classici dell’Accademia. Ci si aspettava che io [Breitner] trasformassi ogni olandese in un bel greco. Si', davvero! Ma non volevo farlo. Ho detto loro: “La mia attività è solo con la persona che hai messo davanti a me. Non con quello che forse potrebbe essere bello!” .
