La maturazione dello stile Inness ha un importante legame con i vari luoghi in cui ha vissuto. Come artista del paesaggio questo era certamente vero di sostanza, ma nel suo caso era vero di stile. Anche se iniziò la sua carriera come seguace della Hudson School, i suoi viaggi influenzarono lo sviluppo del suo lavoro. Due eventi in particolare spiccano.
