Le infermiere del 3° Ospedale Generale di Londra, Wandsworth, sono previste per un paziente appena arrivato. Anche se completato nel 1921, un articolo nel Darling Downs Gazette dal novembre 1918 notò che "Nel suo tempo libero il sergente Coates sta dipingendo una grande composizione chiamata Bringing in the Wounded, la cui scena è la sala di ricezione dell'ospedale Wandsworth". (Personal, Darling Downs Gazette (Qld), 12 novembre 1918, p. 4) Il titolo del lavoro fa riferimento alle prime vittime incontrate dall'artista – soldati britannici e australiani feriti a Gallipoli. George Coates servì con il Royal Army Medical Corps dall'aprile 1915 all'aprile 1919, insieme con altri artisti australiani Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts e AH Fullwood. Insieme a questo grande dipinto, ha completato un certo numero di ritratti significativi mentre serve all'ospedale, lavorando in una piccola tenda off alcove nella sala ricreativa, che lo ha servito come studio.
