Gli studiosi ritengono che questo sia il autoritratto descritto dal figlio dell’artista Giovanni come segue: "Nell'inverno del 1795 dipinse una testa di se stesso, che, anche se lieve, e non interamente finito. . .. mostra il potere raro dell'esecuzione; la somiglianza è anche forte, ma c'è una certa espressione di languore che indica l'approccio della malattia." Nonostante la mancanza di salute di Romney, la sua caratteristica spazzola bravura è evidente nella brocca solcata e capelli bianchi incolti.
