Charlotte Smith fu uno dei più noti poeti e romanzieri romantici della fine del XVIII secolo. Le sue opere hanno influenzato Jane Austen e Charles Dickens. William Wordsworth è noto per aver ammirato il suo 1784 volume di ‘Elegiac Sonnets’ e la ha descritta come “una signora a cui il versetto inglese è sotto maggiore obbligo di essere probabilmente riconosciuto o ricordato”. George Romney e Charlotte Smith erano entrambi amici stretti del poeta William Hayley, e questo ritratto è stato disegnato mentre entrambi stavano frequentando una festa di casa alla casa di Hayley Sussex. Romney in seguito incluso William Hayley nel ritratto conosciuto come The Four Friends (1796) che è anche appeso in questa stanza.
