Il fratello minore di Romney James (1745-1807) aveva sedici anni quando questo schizzo di petrolio fu eseguito. In seguito divenne colonnello della East India Company. L'innovativo soggetto a lume di candela è vicino in stile alle opere di Joseph Wright di Derby da una data simile. Tuttavia, mentre Wright è ben noto per i suoi esperimenti nella pittura di candele e immagini di lampione, solo tre soggetti a lume di candela di Romney sono noti. Due di questi sono stati inclusi in una mostra della lotteria nel Kendal Town Hall nel marzo 1762 per aiutare a finanziare la mossa di Romney a Londra. A differenza del suo contemporaneo, Romney non ha perseguito un interesse per effetti di luce e ombra drammatici dopo questa data.
