Nel primo quarto del XIX secolo Montmartre era ancora una pittoresca periferia di Parigi, dove circa quaranta mulini a vento potevano essere visti. Michel amava questo tratto di terra e ne dipinse molte viste durante la sua carriera. L'osservazione dettagliata e la tecnica piuttosto precisa di questo quadro suggeriscono che è stato fatto intorno al 1820.
