Gerard David ha preso la Vergine e il Bambino dal suo riposo sul volo in Egitto (49.7.21) e li ha messi in un contesto diverso. Giuseppe è assente, e non c'è alcun riferimento eccessivo al viaggio della Sacra Famiglia. Così, nel rispetto di una tendenza contemporanea verso la secolarizzazione delle scene religiose, Maria viene presentata come il modello stesso di una madre nutriente. Un flusso di latte scorre dal suo seno alle labbra del Bambino, che si volge verso lo spettatore e i gesti con un cucchiaio, collegando il nutrimento fisico con il nutrimento spirituale che offre. Il paesaggio sereno fu probabilmente dipinto da Simon Bening.
