Istituito a Bruges, Gerard David si unì anche alla gilda del pittore ad Anversa nel 1515, dove le sue composizioni e i suoi motivi cominciarono presto a circolare. Questo pannello eccellentemente conservato è fortemente in debito con il lavoro di David. Gli stravaganti onlookers vestiti, tuttavia, sono una pura invenzione dell'arte di Anversa, così come la vista del paesaggio con i viaggiatori che trasportano merci per il commercio. A causa dello status di Anversa come centro mercantile per l'Europa del Nord, le scene dell'Adorazione dei Magi erano particolarmente popolari nella città.
