Questo ritratto sembra essere stato iniziato come un rettangolo e poi cambiato in un formato ovale. È uno dei dipinti più virtuosistici di Stuart, chiaramente dai suoi primi anni a Londra, ma sia la sua data che l'identità del sitter sono sconosciuti. Il vago e spazzolato trattamento dello sfondo ha sollevato il suggerimento che il lavoro è incompiuto. Eppure sembra piuttosto essere ispirato da Thomas Gainsborough, i cui dipinti il giovane americano certamente ha visto e ammirato in Inghilterra. Gainsborough ha anche favorito i ritratti ovali e tali colori pastello leggeri come il verde piacevole del cappotto della giovane sitter.
