Originario di Newport, Rhode Island e primo cugino di Stuart, Joseph Anthony è stato addestrato come argenteria e gioielliere, il suo business di famiglia. Anthony si trasferì a Filadelfia circa 1783 dove il suo commercio prosperò, e sposò Henrietta Hillegas di quella città poco dopo.
