Albert Gallaton (1761-1849) è nato in una famiglia svizzera aristocratica a Ginevra. Nel 1780 emigrò negli Stati Uniti e si stabilì in Pennsylvania, dove lanciò la sua carriera politica. Nel 1794 fu eletto al primo dei tre termini della Camera dei Rappresentanti, dove fondò la commissione per i modi e i mezzi. Nel 1801 Thomas Jefferson nominò il suo segretario del Tesoro. Fu ambasciatore in Francia dal 1816 al 1823, e in Gran Bretagna dal 1826 al 1827.
